Dear Friend of Playwrights Horizons:
As a young playwright, I blindly sent a script filled with careless typos and dark frightening characters to Playwrights Horizons, and thankfully a quirky Literary Manager named Tim Sanford recognized a modicum of talent and invited me into a workshop filled with certifiably crazy, but inspired writers. That playwrights’ workshop became my refuge, my home and occasionally a fierce battlefield for the next few years. And I remember Tim’s words of introduction; he said (I'm paraphrasing), that he'd rather produce an imperfect play by a writer with a distinctive voice that was going to continue to grow and evolve, than a perfect play by a writer who had one or maybe two plays worth of ideas.

This year, Tim Sanford is celebrating his 25th year with Playwrights Horizons, fourteen of which he has served as the theater’s Artistic Director. His dedication to the playwright, and not merely the play, is the fundamental reason why Playwrights Horizons remains a vital and welcoming home for new writing.
I am thankful to Tim for being an intrepid supporter of words and ideas, AND for nurturing imperfect creative offerings, that often become wonderful and inspiring works of art. For better or worse, I remain grateful to him for formally inviting me into the New York theater world and producing my comedies, when no other theaters would.
As a member of the arts community, I hope you will join me in honoring Tim and Playwrights Horizons by making a gift to this wonderful, important theater that is committed to American writers and their new works.
