As a theater whose mission is the discovery and development of new and distinctive American writers, we offer many programs and activities designed to support both established and emerging playwrights throughout the writing process. The fruit of these programs is most readily accessible to you, the public, on our two stages. Each season, we present six productions. Our 198-seat Mainstage Theater presents full-length productions brought to life by some of the most talented actors, directors, and designers in this country. Click here to see what's playing on the Mainstage now. In the 99 to 128-seat Peter Jay Sharp Theater, we produce two plays or musicals a season that are among our most adventurous work. Playwrights Horizons awards 4-6 commissions each year. We choose the recipients from a group of writers whose work we already know and wish to encourage. In addition, Playwrights Horizons houses 20-25 play readings each season. All of the scripts chosen for development or production are selected through our open-door submissions process. (Both agent-submitted and unsolicited full-length scripts are accepted.) The best way to become a candidate for a commission or to ultimately have your project produced at Playwrights Horizons is to start submitting your work. Download a podcast (6:00) of Playwrights Horizons' Literary Manager Adam Greenfield discussing the play submission and selection process HERE.
