A 2-week program for high school theater students

June 15–26 and July 13–24, 2026 (2 x 2-week sessions)

Playwrights Horizons is piloting a summer opportunity for high school students passionate about theater. This program provides an introduction to the inner workings of a professional Off-Broadway theater through hands-on projects, mentorship, and exposure to live performance.

Participants will work as a cohort, balancing shared experiences with individual focus areas across departments such as production, development, research, audience engagement, and marketing. The goal is to give students meaningful insight into how theater is created and sustained—onstage, backstage, and behind the scenes.

What Students Will Do

  • Attend orientation and backstage/office tours

  • Shadow staff meetings, rehearsals/workshops, and production activities

  • Daily Lunch ‘n Learns with Staff members or Artists each day of the program

  • Support performances as ushers and event assistants

  • Tour the other locations as part of our organization’s campus including Playwrights Horizons scene shop in Queens learning how professional sets are built (pending scheduling), as well as behind-the-scenes and backstage tours at other Off-Broadway Theater companies

  • Learn about script coverage and how we curate and develop new plays

  • Attend at least one Off-Broadway show

  • Participate in weekly group check-ins

  • Participate in a final presentation/graduation celebration with participant families and teachers

The program is designed for New York City high school students—particularly rising juniors and seniors—who are curious about theater and storytelling and want to learn more about the professional theater ecosystem. No prior professional theater experience is required.

Is this an acting training program?

Is attendance required for the full program?
Because this is a cohort-based intensive, students are expected to participate fully for the entire session. Students should not plan other daytime commitments during the program dates.

Will students receive academic credit?
No. This program does not offer academic credit. However, participants will receive a certificate of completion, which may be included in school records, portfolios, or college applications at the discretion of the student’s school or institution.
