Unplugged FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the “Unplugged” producing model become the only way that PH will produce on the Mainstage, and will these parameters always remain the same?
No, our plan is for the “Unplugged” producing model to become one of many producing models at PH. While the writing in our call for “Unplugged” submissions reflects PH’s larger thinking about theater-making and what’s on our mind as we approach each play we produce, the specific parameters are unique to this inaugural temporary call for submissions for a 2025-2026 “Unplugged” production. We will learn a lot from this experiment, and our understanding about “Unplugged” will evolve accordingly.
If I submit my play to “Unplugged,” will I be considered for any other opportunities outside of “Unplugged?”
This selection process is one of many ways that PH’s literary staff gets to know writers and their work. Any time we are getting to know a writer and their work, we are also considering that writer and work for other programs at PH (i.e. New Works Lab, Almanac, commissions, or anything else).
What are the kinds of plays that would work well in an “Unplugged” production?
A play whose storytelling thrives onstage with reduced physical production costs – we know that this isn’t necessarily every play, but we do know that many plays would benefit from this model. The play is relevant and surprising, and demonstrates a full command of the theatrical form. The writing is specific and has a unique voice, and the play has a driving conceit and major dramatic question that are clear and courageous.
What does it mean when you say “Please note that we will not accept re-submissions of plays you have sent Playwrights Horizons, now or in the future?”
We want to encounter work that is new to us through this process! And in general, we do not have the staff capacity to reconsider plays we have already read. That said: if you have sent us a play within the last two months, and it qualifies for Unplugged, then you may submit it through this portal because it most likely has not been read yet by the team.
What is the biggest mistake you expect to see on “Unplugged” submissions?
In addition to seeking excellent scripts, we are looking for a demonstration of a clear understanding of the Unplugged model and the Rules of Engagement we laid out, as well as a compelling articulation of why the play needs to be produced in this particular way. We expect to see that in the Project Brief, and not including it would be a mistake!
How negotiable are these parameters?
If you’re excited by the “Unplugged” production model and everything we list in the call for submissions except for one or two minor parameters, feel free to submit and explain in your Project Brief why those one or two parameters are negotiations you’re proposing. Once a play is selected, there is no plan to negotiate these parameters throughout the production process – we look forward to making exciting theater in this producing model!
Are musicals accepted?
Unfortunately, no. Musicals almost always need a music team, which you’ll see is not included in the call for submissions. That said, if your piece is a play with some music, and the musical element doesn’t trigger needs for more personnel or equipment, feel free to submit and discuss it in your Project Brief.
If my play gets chosen, how involved should I expect to be in the production process?
As with all of our productions as Playwrights Horizons, we are looking to collaborate with playwrights who are engaged and involved with every step of the production process.
What does “unproduced” mean?
Playwrights Horizons produces world premieres and New York premieres. If your play has had readings or developmental workshops, it is still eligible to submit. If your play has had a production outside of New York, it is still eligible to submit. If your play was included in a festival or had a short run of only a week or so in New York, it is still eligible to submit.
What does “full-length” mean?
The run-time should be at least 60 minutes.
What is your budget and in-house stock?
Please read the Rules of Engagement carefully – that’s what we know as of now, though we are having regular internal meetings at Playwrights Horizons in order to pin down more specific information. We plan to share more details in the upcoming months.
Should I expect a confirmation email after my submission?
No. When you hit “submit,” a window pops up confirming that your application has been submitted; there is no additional email.
When will I hear back from PH?
Because of the high volume of submissions and small size of our staff, we regretfully are not able to respond to each application. We plan to reach out to a selected playwright for the “Unplugged” production in early 2025.
