Assistant Technical Director

Organizational Summary:
Playwrights Horizons is a writer's theater dedicated to the support and development of contemporary U.S. playwrights, composers and lyricists, and to the production of their new work.

Reports to:
Technical Director

Oversees:
Recruits and supervises over-hire staff and crew.

Position Summary:
The Assistant Technical Director is a full time exempt position that (in conjunction with the Technical Director and PM) manages all aspects of the production of the scenic design from pre-production to load out. This includes providing inventory and venue drawings to the designer(s), checking the Scenic Designer’s paperwork for viability, cross-referencing with Lighting and Sound drawings to check for conflicts, and managing the show’s needs during rehearsals, tech, previews, run, and load-out. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safe working environment in all production areas.
  • Maintenance of equipment and inventory, inclusive of building infrastructure, and suggest improvements as needed. 
  • Organize and maintain scenic durable materials (casters, step units, etc.). 
  • Track and order supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Estimate labor, materials, and rental costs during pre-production. 
  • Hire and manage carpentry and paint over hire and run crew.
  • Maintain labor records for payroll for over hire crews.
  • Create load-in schedules in conjunction with the other supervisors in the Production Department.
  • Report expenses for purchases and rentals.
  • Provide rehearsal support as needed. 
  • Attend technical rehearsals and previews as determined by the Technical Director. 

Skills & Qualifications:

  • This is a supervisor position. Our preferred candidate has experience running a scenic crew and/or training at a college or university. Knowledge of the NYC scenic community and vendors is a plus.
  • Candidates should have solid hands-on carpentry skills. Candidates should also be able to use G Suite applications and/or general computer literacy.
  • Candidates must have exceptional organizational and communication skills.
  • Candidates must have the physical ability to perform the skills and responsibilities mentioned above.
  • Candidates must be able to complete shows on time and on budget. 

Compensation:

Salary: $59,500
