Voice & Speech Teachers  – Playwrights Horizons Theater School

Playwrights Horizons is a 50-year-old award winning off-Broadway theater company that includes a Theater School that operates in conjunction with NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Playwrights Horizons Theater School offers students a one-of-a-kind, project-based training program. Rigorous training with our diverse faculty of professional artists working in both the traditions of western theater and global contemporary performance styles challenges each student to discover and bring forth the artist within.

Basic Job Function

We are expanding our current roster of voice and speech teachers, and most urgently hiring teachers who can offer introductory training starting September 2020. We are looking for teachers who have developed their own approach to training young performers in the development of an agile and versatile vocal instrument, rather than delivering only one specific technique or methodology. Our philosophy for voice curriculum is to train students toward sustainable and resonant sound that is rooted in presence, released breath, and authentic emotional connection. We are looking for voice teachers whose pedagogy includes awareness of the differences in individual bodies and their availability to exercises, and who have the sensitivity, knowledge and skill to find adjustments for/with students as necessary. Approaches to speech work should celebrate individuality and be about athleticism, clarity, choice, and intention, rather than training students toward a “correct” sound or dialect.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

We are in the process of assessing and reshaping our curriculum, and searching for teachers who want to be active collaborators in building the future of our acting training. Teaching opportunities exist in both introductory and advanced classes. Individual classes are usually 2hrs in length and there are opportunities to teach as many as 6 classes a week. Schedules will vary according to training level and enrollment and some flexibility exists to work around teachers’ availability.


A terminal degree is not required, but both performance and teaching experience are essential. Certifications in voice and body practices such as Linklater, Rodenberg, Fitzmaurice, Alexander Technique, and Feldenkrais a plus.

Cultural Competence: A sophisticated understanding of Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression principles and practices, and the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. 

Relentless Curiosity: The ability to productively question the status quo and the underlying assumptions contained therein. Process-oriented, creative thinking is a must.

Communication: The ability to communicate transparently and effectively across mediums.

Relationship Management: Excellent social skills with an emphasis on building and maintaining meaningful internal relationships.

Timeline and Compensation

Interviews will begin on July 15th.

Interviews will be done on a rolling basis and will start in July. Compensation range will be disclosed before the first interview.
