Harold Scott

Harold Scott was an American director and actor. His career began Off-Broadway, where he performed in several plays and musicals, including The Blacks, Boys in the Band, Death of Bessie Smith, and Deathwatch, which earned him an Obie award. In 1964, Scott became a member of the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center. There, he performed in After the Fall, Incident at Vichy, Changeling, and Marco Millions. However, Scott, the only black member of the company at the time, soon chose to leave. In a letter to Variety, he declared that he would only be part of a company that supported fully integrated theatre.

Scott soon became a director. He directed on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regionally at theatres including Seattle Repetory Theatre, The Arena Stage, and Playwrights Horizons. He became the head of the directing program at Rutgers' Mason Gross School of the Arts, a position he held for nearly twenty years.

Harold Scott passed away in 2006 at the age of 70.
