As a writer, Mr. Innaurato has an intense operatic voice, by turns comic and sentimental, that lingers in the ear. GUS AND AL is flecked with sweetly written passages. In Mr. Blum's appealing, weary-eyed portrayal, Al's self-pity isn't self-martyrdom so much as a rueful hypersensitivity to the modern world with which he is perpetually at odds.
