Playwrights Horizons Theater School
AT NEW YORK UNIVERSITY'S TISCH SCHOOL OF THE ARTS UNDERGRADUATE DRAMA PROGRAM
Since 1983, the Playwrights Horizons Theater School has provided thousands of theater students with intensive theater training, through a four-year program that emphasizes professional development and interdisciplinary theater training. The curriculum includes courses in acting, directing, dramaturgy, playwriting, design, musical theater, movement, voice, speech, script analysis, and theater management for over 150 students each year.
Third and fourth year students learn the skills of the trade by participating in more than 50 student productions each year, including several original works written and produced by students. Playwrights Horizons’ leadership and staff members also lecture at the School about their work in marketing, development, casting and production management. Students receive additional instruction and insight from professionals in the theater, film and TV industries, and audition training and portfolio review sessions in their final year help prepare them to enter the professional theater industry.
Playwrights Horizons Theater School students graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from New York University. Graduates of the Theater School have gone on to full-time careers in theater, television, and film. Many students have also pursued graduate studies at prestigious universities around the country.
Playwrights Horizons leases two floors of space at 440 Lafayette Street, which include 13 rehearsal studios and two theater spaces. When the studios and spaces are not in use by the Playwrights Horizons Theater School, they are rented out as Playwrights Rehearsal Studios. Conveniently located and affordably priced, spaces at Playwrights Rehearsal Studios are rented to hundreds of theater artists, not-for-profit arts groups and educational organizations annually.
