FAQ
When is the application deadline?
Applications for the 2025/26 season are open until March 30 and can be accessed here.
Here is the anticipated timeline for the recruitment process:
-
Interviews will begin at the end of April and will go until mid-May. Candidates may be asked to provide an additional work sample.
-
Offers will be made to candidates during the last week of May.
Can I apply to more than one fellowship?
Applicants are welcome to express interest in more than one fellowship, and the application includes a question where you can indicate the departments that you would like to apply for.
What are the application requirements?
When completing the online application form, applicants are asked to upload a resume, short written or video responses to several prompts, and contact information for two references. While cover letters are optional, they should be submitted as a single PDF with your resume. If selected to interview, candidates may be asked to provide writing samples or a portfolio.
Are the fellowships full-time? What's the schedule?
Fellowships for the 2026/27 season will begin in September and continue through the production season, concluding in June.
General Management and Marketing Fellows join their teams three days per week during normal business hours (10AM – 6PM), and the schedule is determined based on both the fellow's availability and the department's needs.
Artistic Fellows join their team four days a week during normal business hours (10AM – 6PM).
Stage Management Fellows are in residence for the six day rehearsal/performance schedule (usually Tuesday – Sunday) when involved with a show.
How much are the fellows paid?
Fellows are paid minimum wage, which is currently $17 per hour.
Can I do a fellowship and college at the same time?
Because our fellowships are primarily full-time and run the duration of our production season, the program is geared toward those who have completed their undergraduate training or do not anticipate being enrolled in a full-time educational program during the fellowship. If you’re nearing graduation in spring of 2025, we encourage you to apply. Please note that it is not a prerequisite that our Fellows have earned a bachelor's degree.
Does Playwrights Horizons offer the fellowships during the summer?
Because our season-length fellowships usually begin in September and run through June, we do not traditionally offer additional opportunities during the summer months.
Am I able to work a second job or have another internship during my fellowship?
Yes, it is possible for Fellows to participate in other opportunities that support them during their time outside of office hours or their rehearsal schedule. Stage Management fellows may encounter opportunities to participate in outside work during periods between production commitments.
What is the fellowship capstone project?
At the end of each Fellowship season, members of that year’s cohort will be asked to present a summary of their capstone project to members of the staff, board, and fellow cohort members at the Fellowship Farewell Ceremony.
A capstone project is an assignment determined by the fellow, with guidance from their supervisors, meant to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired during the course of a fellowship program. The project culminates in a 5-10 minute presentation, and the project itself can can look like many things: a powerpoint of the spreadsheets and tracking systems used during the production of a show; a dramaturgical analysis of a script or an essay detailing the systems and processes’ developed for a specific moment in a show; a proposed marketing campaign, event, piece of content, or initiative for a show, etc. The project must exemplify the fellow’s abilities and experiences, and it can detail what the day-to-day work responsibilities were as well as highlight specific learnings.
After each fellow presents their project, we allow for questions from the audience.
The purpose of the capstone project is to have fellows thoughtfully reflect on their time at Playwrights Horizons and assess and document their new skills and knowledge. In addition, this is an opportunity for the staff to celebrate the fellows’ and their contributions and for fellows to share with everyone else what they have been working on all season.
I'm not from New York. What about housing?
We are unable to provide housing for our Fellows, but can provide guidance on how to find housing in New York.
If I am not a U.S. citizen, can I still apply to the program?
While you do not need to be a United States citizen in order to participate in this program, fellows receive their weekly payments through payroll and will need to provide work authorization and a Social Security Number in order to be paid.
Is prior experience required?
Having prior work experience is not required for this program. We are seeking fellows who have demonstrated a passion for working in the arts and who are at a point in their education or careers to strongly benefit from this kind of immersive training experience.
I can point to my time at Playwrights Horizons as the critical step in my career as a playwright, artistically and professionally.
