The Fellowships offered are:
Stage Management Fellowship
The Stage Management Fellow acts as a second assistant to the Equity Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Manager throughout each show's rehearsal period. They will be paired with an AEA stage manager each show to mentor them throughout their fellowship
Common duties include:
- Tracking properties
- Blocking
- Scheduling
- Script changes
During technical rehearsals and the run of the show, the Fellow serves as a member of the backstage crew. Beyond the standard Stage Management Fellow commitments, there are additional opportunities for further access as a member of the Playwrights community for the duration of the season.
This opportunity will begin in September 2025 and conclude in July 2026.
Artistic/Literary Fellowship
The Artistic/Literary Fellowship provides an opportunity to actively participate in the creative process of new works at Playwrights Horizons! From learning about the submission process to supporting and planning readings, the Artistic Fellow will gain exposure to relationships between creatives and institutions while developing skills that support both in the creative process.
Responsibilities:

Reads, evaluates, and responds to script submissions of both plays and musical

Maintains the playwright database

Supports the developmental play and musical readings in the New Works Lab

Contributes to dramaturgical research and other needs for season productions and additional artistic programming

Collaborates on community engagement events

Scouts readings and productions around the city
What You Bring to the Artistic/Literary Department:

A passion for supporting new play development processes and for reading scripts

A desire to learn about the inner workings of an artistic department within a nonprofit institution

An enthusiasm for seeing new work and productions around the city

Strong communication skills

Keen attention to detail and an instinct for taking initiative

The ability to work remotely with internet access

Prior work experience in or academic study of the performing arts or related fields

Marketing Fellowship
The Marketing Fellowship provides an opportunity to join a team of passionate and driven marketers and content creators in supporting the campaign and marketing strategy for a season! The Marketing Fellow will gain exposure to various key processes of the department, including sales reporting, email marketing, database management, market research analysis, and more.
Responsibilities:

Work hand in hand with fellow team members to build partnerships with organizations and businesses within our community.

Own Marketing’s cross-promotion strategy for each production and identify other theaters, arts, and cultural organizations whose audiences might take special interest in our shows.

Serve as the first point of contact on Playwrights Horizons’ general info inbox

Manage the online bookshop orders, track and fulfill orders weekly.

Design, schedule, and track the performance of emails for our season productions, alongside the Marketing Assistant and Director of Marketing.

Conduct audience and industry research to support our single ticket sales, package sales, audience development efforts, etc.

Assist team members in planning and executing marketing events held throughout the year.

Process website change requests, in partnership with the Marketing Assistant.

Design and print basic print materials to support our productions

Provide a keen copy-editing eye for digital and print materials.

Manage the input of receipts in the financial tracking system.
-
Other projects and responsibilities to be assigned, based on the Marketing Fellow’s interest and desired development areas.
What You Bring to the Marketing Department:
-
A demonstrable desire to pursue marketing/arts administration; one prior internship at an arts organization, or equivalent experience, is a plus

A self-starter attitude with the ability to multitask and a desire to learn about marketing

Meticulous attention to detail and time management skills

Willingness to learn new software as it pertains to job responsibilities

General Management Fellowship
The General Management Fellow will work closely with the Company Manager and General Management team on all the daily aspects of running a non-profit off-Broadway theater including drafting contracts; tracking production expenses; monitoring and reporting on ticket sales, availability, and house seats; assisting with theater rental coordination; reporting weekly to unions, prepping for Board meetings, and more.

24-hour work week from September 2025-June 2026
The Playwrights Horizons Theatrical Fellowship Program provides early career professionals with direct learning opportunities for the next generation of leaders in the performing arts industry.
This program offers excellent practical experience and training for a career in arts administration or stage management, and an opportunity to collaborate closely with and learn from Playwrights staff members and professionals in the industry. We are proud that many program alumni have gone on to become some of the most active directors, writers, composers, and administrators in the country, and in addition, many former fellows have joined the Playwrights staff.
Fellows are paid $16.50 per hour. Fellows also receive unlimited MetroCards for the duration of their fellowship.
Fellows will…
- Be invited to attend a series of seminars that include talks with seasoned professionals in the industry
- Have the opportunity for a resume review, job application review, or interview preparation
- Be invited to participate in opening nights, community events, and other staff events
- Receive theater tickets and tickets to PH’s shows
- Will complete a capstone project at the end of their fellowship sharing with their peers what they have learned
