Who We Are
Playwrights Horizons – where theater begins.
We believe in theater as the most human and immediate medium to tell the stories of our time, and affirm the primacy and centrality of the playwright to the form.
We support each playwright’s full creative development and nurture their unique voice, resulting in a heterogeneous mix of as many styles as there are artists.
We share the stories of today by the writers of tomorrow. These intrepid, diverse artists develop plays and musicals that are relevant, intelligent, and boundary-pushing. Our plays reflect the world around us through stories that can only be told on stage.
Much like our work, the 60,000 people who join us each year are curious and adventurous. Playwrights is committed to engaging and developing audiences to sustain the future of American theater. That’s why we offer affordably priced tickets to every performance to young people and others, and offer engaging content – both onsite and online – to delight and inspire new play lovers in NYC, around the country, and throughout the world.
We meet the individual needs of each writer in order to further develop their work. Our New Works Lab produces readings and workshops to cultivate our artists’ new projects. Through our robust commissioning program and open script submission policy, we identify and cultivate the most exciting American talent and help bring their unique vision to life in many different forms.
OUR DOWNTOWN PROGRAMS
…reflect and deepen our mission in various ways, including the innovative curriculum at our Theater School, mutually beneficial collaborations with our Resident Companies, and welcoming myriad arts and education not-for-profits that operate their programs in our studios.
We are a home for the American writer. It is expressed in our very name: we are Playwrights.
Our New Look
Our logo puts our very essence in the hands of those who shape it most directly: our playwrights. As you browse this website and visit us on 42nd Street, you’ll notice that our name is written many different ways, in the hand of the writers themselves. They make this company the institution that we’re proud to be, and we’re excited to highlight their distinct writing styles in our very name.
While our onstage offerings change each season, one constant holds: our steadfast commitment to championing the voice of the American writer. We foster an enticing mix — of voice, form, style, experience – that is the heartbeat of Playwrights. It’s the stuff that, throughout our history, has guided us as we present the stories of today by the writers of tomorrow.
Playwrights Horizons is a writer's theater dedicated to the support and development of contemporary American playwrights, composers and lyricists, and to the production of their new work.
In a city rich with cultural offerings, Playwrights Horizons' 49-year-old mission is unique; we are the only major theater in New York with this specific mission. We have distinguished ourselves by the caliber of our work and our steadfast commitment to the voice of the American writer. It is a mission that is always timely, and it is essential to the future of the American theater.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Tim Sanford and Managing Director Leslie Marcus, Playwrights Horizons encourages the new work of veteran writers while nurturing an emerging generation of theater artists. We are among the few theaters in the US that maintain an open submission policy, and writers are supported through every stage of their growth with a series of development programs that comprise our New Works Lab. We present at least six productions annually on our two stages, each of which is a World, American or New York premiere.
