TESTIMONIALS

Before the Literary Fellowship, I knew I wanted to be a playwright. After the Literary Fellowship, I knew what that actually looked like. What's more, I knew how to make it happen. I can point to my time at Playwrights Horizons as the critical step in my career as a playwright, artistically and professionally.

—Sarah DeLappe, Literary Fellow 2012/13, Playwright – Lincoln Center Theater/Playwrights Realm: THE WOLVES (2017 Pulitzer Prize Finalist for Drama)

"Playwrights Horizons has been the single most influential institution on my career in the theater. I applied to their Directing Fellowship program the minute I graduated college because I was interested in developing new American plays, and Playwrights Horizons was the home for the writers I admired and the development of their work. It was a monumental education. Ten years later I was lucky enough to be asked back to direct a play for Playwrights Horizons, and that play, CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION, launched my career."

—Sam Gold, Directing Fellow 2000/01, Director – Playwrights Horizons: THE FLICK, THE BIG MEAL, KIN, CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION (Obie Award); Broadway: FUN HOME (Tony Award), A DOLL'S HOUSE: PART II

Playwrights Horizons was able to provide me a graduate school level education along with real world Off-Broadway experience. I was able to work on three very different shows with three very different stage management teams, and feel like a valuable part of each process. The experience I gained, people I met, and the memories I made through the Fellowship Program were invaluable, and culminated in my first Equity contract.

—Noah Silva, Stage Management Fellow 2016/17, Stage Manager – Playwrights Horizons: IF PRETTY HURTS UGLY MUST BE A MUHFUCKA, THE TREASURER; Clubbed Thumb, NYTW, and Broadway: WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS TO ME

It's impossible to overstate the importance of my time in the Fellowship Program at Playwrights. I learned what it means to be an arts administrator working with integrity to facilitate and produce exciting new work, and in addition to listening to some of the best marketers and managers, and sitting in on meetings, I actually got to DO things! I met some of my best friends, received personalized and outstanding mentorship, and before the program was over I even had a job!

—Casey York, Marketing Fellow 2010/11, General Manager, Ars Nova; Former Associate General Manager at Playwrights Horizons

Playwrights Horizons, its staff, and the artists who grace its stages together form a perfect environment for anyone interested in how great theater gets made. During my year as Musical Theater/Artistic Fellow, I made impressive connections, got valuable career advice, and witnessed breathtaking art take shape in the rehearsal room.

—Robert Lopez, Artistic and Musical Theater Fellow 1997/98, Composer and Lyricist – Broadway: THE BOOK OF MORMON and AVENUE Q (Tony Awards); Film: FROZEN and COCO (Academy Awards)

When I began my fellowship, I had a background in theater, and a strong desire to learn about casting, but I had never worked in a casting office. The hands-on immersive nature of our Fellowship Program was the best possible learning experience. I immediately was treated like a crucial member of a team and given important responsibilities, yet always encouraged to ask questions. I am so thrilled to have found a home at Playwrights.

—Lisa Donadio, Casting Fellow 2000/01, Associate Casting Director, Playwrights Horizons
